Swimming pools present the greatest risk to young children. Drowning is the leading cause of death to children. The most important intervention that prevents accidental pool drowning is adding a fence around pool.
If you have a swimming pool, a four-sided fence around the pool is an absolute necessity, especially if you have young children. Some states require fences of a certain height and even padlocks for the gates to such areas to keep people out when there’s no adequate supervision.
No matter where you live, the fence should be at least four feet high, with spokes and slats not more than three inches apart. Be sure that the gate is self-latching, with the lock out of your child’s reach. After erecting a fence, check the pool fence and gate regularly.
There are several fence styles and types available for your backyard pool, including:
- Chain Link
- Wood
- Ornamental Aluminum
- Glass panel
- Solid panel PVC
Absolutely agree. We must put safety first. Anyway, swimming pool with fences all around is still a new idea for me. But, good info..
